What to Wear To A Job Interview [For the Creative Industry] - Cubicle Chic

What to Wear To A Job Interview [For the Creative Industry] - Cubicle Chic What to Wear To A Job Interview [For the Creative Industry] How To Wear, Job search, Work Outfit May 12, 2017 13 Comments  Top: Nastygal Bodysuit, similar here   Pencil skirt: Topshop, similar here and here Trench vest: Poshmark, similar here and here{Appropriate for positions such as engineer, coder, startup product manager, graphic designer, communications specialist, digital marketing strategist, videographer}So, an in-person interview has been confirmed. You are taking hours to study the industry, get to know the company, understand the role. You’ve printed 5 copies of your resume and got that portfolio of your work ready to go.Now, the last and the only loose end is the outfit. What should you wear for this in person meeting?Your main goal is to look professional, showcase your style, and have a little bit of an edge so you leave a strong impression. You have done the research (you’ve looked on their social media channel, read the company blog, searched for news pieces that feature them), you know the company has that business casual environment where people dress according to their personal style. What are some rules of thumb to follow when creating an outfit for an interview in the creative industry?Be Confident and ComfortableYou want to feel yourself, and not be worried about a longer than usual sleeve or a pair of pants that’s tight in a place you’re not used to. So, don’t wear clothes you’re not used to wearing. And when in doubt, opt for “soft material on the inside and stiff material on the outside.” For example, a silk shirt allows you to be comfortable, and a more structured blazer will give you that professional looking edge.Use Colors to Your AdvantageWearing a pop of color is an easy way to add a focal point to an otherwise simple and minimalist outfit. Try a colorful bag to an otherwise black and white outfit, or a colorful (but simplistic) necklace, or a pair of colorful shoes. These will help those people that you meet remember you.Start with a Basic Must-HaveIf you don’t know where to start, I always tell people to start with one piece of clothing that you know says “professional”. Take a pencil skirt, a crisp blazer, a silk blouse, and go from there. Once you have the foundation of your outfit, pick other things in relatively neutral colors that compliment this piece. Finally, add a pop of color somewhere, and you should be done!Do you need help putting together an interview outfit? Email me! We can do a 15 min Facetime session and try to put together based on things already in your closet. Or, if you are inclined to shop for the interview, I can also make recommendations for that! All Photography by Natalie Alvarado @ StylenfuseIf you’re looking for more sample interview outfits, here are 4 interview outfits some other amazing fashion bloggers. Drawing Attention to Your Accomplishments What Your Resume Says About You

Drawing Attention to Your Accomplishments What Your Resume Says About You Focusing on your experience, your background and your accomplishments is whats known as a functional resume. Chronological resumes list all of your employers in the order of the date that you worked for them, typically with the oldest employer at the bottom of the resume. Functional resumes are great for people who are looking to make a career change, people with multiple positions with different industries,  people with gaps in their employment and those just starting out on their career. However, as always, I have to warn you that recruiter and hiring people really dont like functional style resumes. They feel you may be hiding something. You can combine both resume types to give yourself a well-rounded appearance to potential employers, plus hiring managers love to see a list of previous experience, especially when its for a   position of authority.   Providing work history is an excellent way to showcase how your accomplishments have translated to actual success in the work place. Start by writing a list of the skills that you used at your previous jobs. List them one by one so that you cover a wide range of tasks on your resume. Depending on the position youre applying for, modify your skills to directly reflect those of the position that youre applying for. Dont embellish, instead focus on what youve accomplished and how it will allow you to succeed at your new position. Use bullet points to provide a concise and accurate depiction of your responsibilities and where you used your skills. List our your accomplishments and try to use numbers to demonstrate an actual value. You can say something like, you promoted better paper management and turned your office into a green office, reducing the waste and lowering cost for trash maintenance by a third. Or that you increased sales in your office by 15% over a 5 year period. Show your employer in the bullet section of your accomplishments. You want to be able to match your accomplishments with a tangible company, so make sure to list the companies where you worked. Your   accomplishments only mean so much if they can be backed up. Listing your companies, or contacts you may have done a project for, will help highlight your accomplishments. Use action verbs at the beginning of your accomplishments. Saying things like, “demonstrated” a strong desire to train new employees, is better than saying “trained staff.” Elaborate on your accomplishments, its all right to use descriptive words here. In fact, the HR manager may appreciate your ability to be descriptive. Complete a short job history below the accomplishment section of your resume. This will help employers get a good idea of your work history. Make sure to include the name of the employer, your job title, the dates you worked for the employer and the location of the job. Write this list in reverse chronological order. Its time to get those accomplishments out there and find the job that youve always wanted!

What does a Division Systems Officer do?I began my LOral career focused onsupporting the abverkauf function across LOral USA and today I oversee ourlargest divisions technology strategy and portfolio spanning across mark eting, sales, operations, and retail. Technology is contributing to the LOralgeschftlicher umgang in vast and exciting ways. And youve been with LOral for seven years. Where did you start out at the company?I was handling project management for a US ITteam that eventually became an Americas IT team. I led the creation andbuilding of a mobile sales aid application in use by our field sales teamsacross the various LOral divisions. I created internal portals for ourvarious teams including our previous internal LOral USA communications hub.And then I got this opportunity to take on a more strategic role, closer to thegeschftliches miteinander, which is really exciting for me, but in my early years I needed to bemore in the trenches to be able to do the role Im in now.Speaking of the early years, what kinds of opportunities do you see for entry-level folks in IT and technology at LOral?Technology project management is huge.Certainly, individuals that are studying tech but have that knack o r skill tobe able to translate it to the business community are essential. So, what weneed and what we value a lot are individuals that can do that type of role, andbecome the middle-person between technology and the business. We also have a variety of neat applications inuse at LOral. Salesforce is one of them. Were also a big Microsofttechnology shop. Digital has so many opportunities with the way e-commerce isgrowing and changing on such a frequent basis that any of those areas are greatpoints of entry for technology folks.Tell us about the company culture at LOral. How does it defy the stereotypes about the exclusivity of tech culture, especially for women? The company culture is extremely inclusive andwelcoming to all, especially in the tech space. As a good example, I was onmaternity leave for close to five months last year, and upon returning, I wasgiven a vorrcken to this position that Im in right now, because they knew Ihad the qualifications and that I would do a great job. And even though Iwasnt here and was caring for a newborn, I was still considered and thought offor opportunities, which in a lot of places wouldnt be the case.On the other hand, how does LOrals culture compare to the fast-paced nature of other tech companies? Its an extremely entrepreneurial company, soyou have the ability to work on so many different things at any given point intime. Leadership is very eager for individuals to jump right in and contribute. The business relationships that we have built are respected, and IT does have aseat at the table. I mean, the fact that I sit on the management committee forthe Consumer Products Division in an IT role is a huge testament to howtechnology is valued at the company.Weve made a commitment to make LOral thenumber one beauty tech company in the world, and we dont take something likethat lightly. Theres a lot of investment behind technology, and you can feelit in the pulse of the company. Its really exciting and keeps you on yourtoes. Th is is a company with a huge history behindit. But what everyones seen from us in terms of consumer products, all of thatinnovation, were now doing the same thing from a technology perspective. Itsa complete transformation of how LOral works. So right now is a reallyexciting time to hop on board. When tech and business talent are considering their options, why should they consider LOral? Its a very team-oriented culture. It doesntmatter what level of the organization youre in, everyone pitches in andparticipates to deliver and to get things done. Everyones always ready tohustle, you know? And there are so many different areas you can play a role in,because were a consumer products company, and that means there are so manyways we do business. The work is certainly demanding andchallenging, but its so exciting. The individual really sets their own pathand makes sure that theyre doing what they need to do to be successful. Thatmakes me want to bring my best self to work every day and reall y challengemyself. At the same time, there really is that mindset and that focus fromleadership on identifying talent and finding the best opportunities for theindividual.Any advice for women in particular hoping to enter the tech space?Keep up with your field, keep askingquestions, and build the confidence to hold people accountable and work acrossa variety of teams. The other thing Ill say is, when you execute, when you deliver, thats what earns respect. So you can have all the bestrelationships in the world, but if youre not delivering quality work orfollow-through, its not going to be respected if youre not getting thingsdone in a quality way, and delivering time and time again.
